Digital Food Vouchers help to feed thousands amid the COVID-19 pandemic

The Bahamas reported its first COVID-19 case in March 2020. The virus’s rapid spread has resulted in businesses closing, people jobless, homeless, and without food. And, nearly a year later, the need for assistance remains at unprecedented levels.

Soon after the pandemic hit, non-profit organizations like Hands for Hunger sprang into action by partnering with Kanoo, a digital payments platform, to implement a digital food voucher program. Every week, eligible persons received digital gift cards ranging from $50 to 400 in value redeemable at Super Value/ Quality Super Markets. H4H purchased the digital gift cards from Super Value and issued them to clients through our platform.

Hands for Hunger’s Executive Director Keisha Ellis revealed how this food voucher program is critical as the country continues to fight against this global health crisis. Immediately, she said, the team started to receive an overwhelming number of requests for food assistance.

“With the emergency orders and safety protocols coming into effect, many Bahamians were laid off substantially, losing their financial ability to procure food items. This initiative is one way that Hands for Hunger believe it can help address the increased need,” Ellis explained.

“We are trying to reach as many people as possible, but that will depend on funding.… Read the rest

We Mean Business: Benefits of B2B Transactions

Doing business in The Bahamas can be extremely challenging, as many of the systems in place are still paper-based. While the rest of the world has seen a drastic digital revolution where money transactions are done via online platforms and apps, The Bahamas is now just catching up.

Kanoo’s founders began designing our digital payments platform in 2017, allowing Bahamians to participate in this revolution and do business globally.  They recognized the need for an affordable, convenient, digital payment option as it would bring many opportunities for local companies to faster and more efficiently.

Due to the pandemic, we’ve seen many challenges confronting the B2B space. As it stands, most local businesses rely heavily on in-person processes, costly paper invoices, and slow-moving checks. But, we’ve found that digital payments are a safer, more accessible, convenient, and more cost-effective option, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Also, with digital payments, the money goes directly into your account.

Accepting digital payments saves you time, money, and energy, which gives you the freedom to grow your business. This method ensures your business has consistent cash flow and accurate bookkeeping.  Studies show that customers who have multiple payment options at their disposal can lead to merchants getting paid faster, improving cash flow, and allowing companies to expand at a quicker rate.… Read the rest

Govt signs contract with Kanoo for e-payment system in family courts

The government yesterday signed a three-year contract with Kanoo Pays to implement an e-payment system within the family courts.

Chief Justice Brian Moree said the government would pay $25,000 annually for two of the three years.

“This new software will provide an electronic platform for making and receiving payments in the family court pursuant to orders by the magistrate,” he said.

“The use of the service platform will be voluntary and certain transactions will attract a modest user fee, which you will hear more about shortly. The benefits for the court users will include the following: more convenient for users in that they will not have to visit the Magistrates Court Complex to either make a payment or receive a payment.

“The transactions will be carried out on mobile devices anywhere where the payer or the payees happens to be. Secondly, the new system, which we call CAPS, standing for Court Automated Payment System, will allow us to do much faster processing of transactions, thereby giving the recipient almost immediate access to the funds.

“Thirdly, there will be almost immediate notification of payments. Fourthly, the users — either the paying party or the receiving party — will not have a bank account to use CAPS.… Read the rest

Kanoo addresses health visa payment system disruption

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Local digital payments provider Kanoo has issued a statement apologizing for the service disruptions that prevented travelers from paying for a mandatory health visa over the weekend and seeking to assure consumers that the issue has been resolved.

“On Saturday, December 12, 2020, Kanoo experienced some technical difficulties with our primary database server, which resulted in the interruption of transaction services for an extended period,” the statement read.

“This technical difficulty caused the degradation of services across Kanoo’s related servers and initiated our internal safety protocols that limit access or activity across our systems. This feature is designed to protect our systems from any irregularities until the issue can be resolved while maintaining data integrity.

“Our team has addressed the issue, and our system has been fully restored and remains operational. We are conducting a thorough analysis and review to ensure that this issue will not occur in the future.”

Travelers entering the country and needing to secure the mandatory health visa were left frustrated over the weekend after a system “reboot” disrupted the connection between the health visa site and payment portal.

Minister of Tourism Dionisio D’Aguilar on Sunday told Eyewitness News that between 3 am and 9 pm on Saturday, travelers could apply for a health visa but not pay for one.… Read the rest

Kanoo approaching 13,000 active users

In less than ten months, digital payment provider Kanoo has grown its active users from a couple of dozen to almost 13,000 people who are making digital fiat transactions daily.

Kanoo’s Chief Executive Officer Keith Davies said this growth is indicative of the times given the COVID-19 pandemic.

Davies added he foresees this form of financial transaction experiencing a groundswell of adoption.

“Because of the circumstances that we find ourselves in, we’re going to see adoption take place. We categorize them as early adopters, late adopters, and never adopters. The early adopters typically tend to be the younger adopters, technically savvy persons, and are not afraid of change and new technology coming to the fore. They will adapt immediately because it saves them time, they’re used to doing transactions online, which makes doing those transactions easier. So you’re going to see a section of the population where it’s not a big deal,” he told Guardian Business yesterday.

“We are beyond 12,000 and approaching 13,000 users shortly, and we started with a couple of dozen persons back in December.”

Davies continued, “Let me distinguish, not 13,000-plus downloads. These are 13,000 active users; people identified and using Kanoo. Companies always do this, well I have 50,000 downloads, but how many people are actually using it?”… Read the rest
